1 cup chana dal

1/2 turmeric

2 whole fresh green chili

3/4 onions cut into large pieces

3 medium potatoes ,peeled, and cut into  1- inch cubes

1 tsp ground coriander

2 tbsp mustard oil

salt to taste

2 bay leaf

10  fresh curry leaves

1 whole dried red chili

2 -inch cinnamon stick

4 hole cardamom

3 whole cloves

1/2 Lb raw prawns or shrimp ,shelled and divined

1/2 tsp garam masala

2 tbsp finely chopped fresh cilantro

A sprinkle of ghee in optional




1. Bring chana dal and water to boil in a deep pan. Add turmeric,green chili,and onion.  Simmer,

covered,30- 35  minutes. or until dal is  soft.Stir often. Add potatoes and  simmer,covered for

another 15-20 minutes until both dal and potatoes are tender. Stir in coriander,salt and keep

dal at  a low  simmer.


2. Heat oil in a skillet over medium low heat. Fry bay leaf and red chili until the chili blackness . Fry

cardamom,cinnamon and cloves for a few seconds. Add prawns and cook just until they turn pink,

about a minute ,stirring often. Pour the contents of this to skillet over the dal.


3. Cook,covered,3 to 5 minutes or just  just until the prawns are done. Remove from the heat.

Stirrin garam masala,Cilantro and ghee gently so as not to break the prawns. Cover and let

stand for a few minutes to help develop the flavors. Garnish with lemon wedges. Serve

piping hot.
