Paruppu Masiyal


¼ cup toor dal

¼ teaspoon turmeric powder

2 cloves garlic, crushed

¼ teaspoon salt

¾ teaspoon cumin powder

2 too 4 curry leaves, chopped


Boil 3 cups of water in a tall saucepan.  Add toor and turmeric powder.  Reduce heat to medium and cook, uncovered, for about 30 minutes until dal becomes creamy.  If water evaporates during the cooking process, you may add another ½ cup of water and cook until dal becomes creamy.  You may use a masher to achieve the correct consistency of the dal. 


Transfer dal to a bowl with ½ cup water and mix well.  Add garlic, salt, cumin powder and curry leaves to creamy dal.  Mix well.
